12/15/2014 - Letter to the Community regarding the Board of Education
    15 December, 2014

    Dear Suffield Parents and Staff,

As all of us who have chosen to live and raise our families here can agree, Suffield is a special place for our kids to attend school, thanks to the tireless and passionate work of our administrators, teachers, staff and parents. We are extremely proud to call Suffield our home, and we on the Suffield Board of Education are committed to building upon that promise of top-level schools for all.

As you may know, during the past several weeks the school board has been notified of several impending changes to district leadership. Our Superintendent, Dr. Karen Baldwin, has accepted the opportunity to lead the Ridgefield school district and we wish Dr. Baldwin the best in her new role. Additionally, four members of the Suffield BOE have resigned. We would like to express our gratitude for the time and service of these members.

We are writing to inform you of the process which will be used to appoint new members to the Suffield Board of Education, and to ensure you this will be done with a spirit of transparency and cooperation that will allow us to continue the work of moving the district forward to provide the best educational and community experience possible.

The Board as currently constituted has a bipartisan quorum (five members) that will proceed with the work of the district. Our process to fill the vacancies is governed by the Town Charter and the Board’s bylaws  and we are gratified that many qualified community members have already stepped forward to consider volunteering on the school board. It is the responsibility of the Board of Education to interview and vote on candidates to reconstitute a full board of nine members. We are guided by a legal timeline of 30 days, beginning on December 16th when we move to accept the resignations offered.

The near-term objectives of the BOE are:

    1. Maintain a supported and consistent learning environment in our schools
    2. Draft, propose and pass a budget for the 2015/2016 school year
    3. Form a search committee and, with community input, interview and hire a new Superintendent to lead our district

We will continue to communicate with you regularly to share important news and developments. Also, our regular Board of Education and subcommittee meetings are all public meetings which you are welcome to attend, and you may find agendas, minutes and school board member contact information at http://www.suffield.org/page.cfm?p=498.

Please do not hesitate to contact any of us with questions or concerns you may have. We take very seriously the trust you have placed in us with your children’s education, and we are committed to the ongoing work of teaching, learning and serving all of our students and families.

    Sincerely,

    The Suffield Board of Education
