    Highway Department

    The Highway Department is on call for all emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when contacted by the Police Department. All maintenance services for the Town are provided by the Highway Department except for routine maintenance at the schools.


    Responsibilities include:

    • Maintenance of 80 miles of roads and paved areas including plowing, sanding, roadside mowing, sweeping, tree trimming
    • Pot hole and curb repair
    • Drainage improvements
    • Care of 150+ acres of Town lawns, park fields, playing fields including mowing, weed control, planting, irrigation
    • General and seasonal upkeep at Town parks, recreation facilities
    • Building maintenance, repair and moving services at Town buildings
    • Seasonal bulky waste pick-up
    • Leaf drop off at Suffield Landfill
    • Assistance to volunteer organizations for Town-wide functions
    • Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day (link), second Saturday in April

    Winter Reminders

    • Keep fire hydrants on your property clear of snow

    • Public sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice within 12 hours of storm

    • Street parking prohibited in residential areas during snow storms
    • Do not throw snow into roads when clearing driveway
    • Shovel catch basins near your home, report excessive flooding to Highway Department
    • Winter sand mixed with salt available to residents at Highway Garage, 42 Fflyer Place
      (bring shovel and bucket)

    Mailbox Repair:

    • Damage caused by the force of heavy snow is not covered
    • Only mailboxes directly hit by snowplow will be replaced by the Town with a possible reimbursement of $45 to be determined by the Highway Foreman
